Jim's martial arts career began in 1972, training in Chito-ryu Karate under O' Sensei Mas Tsuruoka, who brought Karate-do to Canada. He studied Wu-style Taiji with Sifu (now Grand Master) Eddie Wu beginning in 1978, then Aikido Aikikai with Sensei Takeshi Kimeda in the early 80's and and in the mid-90's with Sensei Fran Turner. He trained in Yang-style Taiji and Qigong under Sifu Andy James from 1998 to 2007.

Jim has practiced mainly Tibetan Buddhist meditation since 1993, first with Shambhala International, and today as a Vajrayana practitioner and meditation instructor within the Nyingma/Kagyu practice lineage. He has been inspired in recent years by the somatic meditation teachings of Tsoknyi Rinpoche and Lama Willa Blythe Baker and perhaps most profoundly in past years by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and his senior students Reggie Ray and Pema Chodron.

Jim has a Master’s Degree in Somatic Education from the University of Toronto. He was a community college psychology and business  professor for eighteen years. He was clinic manager and chief counsellor at a Toronto wellness clinic. Jim is an NLP Master Practitioner and Certified Ericksonian Hypnotist, and trained further in Western psychophysical therapy systems, particularly TragerWork, the Robert Master’s Method, and meridian energy therapy.
